A Pleasant Surprise

When I was planning this trip, I decided to use Lexington as a base and do day trips from there. By doing it that way, we wouldn't have pack and unpack every day. Our second day in
Lexington, we went south to Harrodsburg. There was a fort there and a Shaker Exhibit which I thought would interest Lynn. We found the Shaker first.
Pleasant Hill is a wonderful exhibit showing what a Shaker Community was like. The Shakers were a group of people who joined together to serve the Lord. They believed in communal
living, no sex, and they really got into their worship service with hand clapping and foot stomping and dancing. They were wonderful craftspeople and their furniture is famous for being
practical as well as useful. Their brooms are also well known.
We enjoyed an informative talk and then walked around the
village. One of the demonstrations was of their worship service. The lady demonstrated the singing and she had a wonderful voice. The Meeting House acoustics were incredible. We had purchased tickets for a river boat ride so we
left Pleasant Hill and went on Ft Harrod. The fort was a replica
and there was also a museum but what was fun was to see the place where Abe Lincoln's folk were married. The building is housed in a church and it is not until you enter the church that you see the other building.
We made it back to the river for our delightful cruise on the Kentucky River past the KY Palisades. The rock formations were very interesting and the skipper of the boat told us that the land had just been purchased by the Nature Conservancy as a park. So this lovely part of
Kentucky will be preserved and enjoyed for some time to come.
