Now This Is The Way To Celebrate The 4th Of July
What do you do when you are in a place away from home and it is the 4th of July? Most of the attractions or historic sites are closed. You go to the nearest State Park. In this case, it was the Red River Gorge and The Natural Arch Park. I had heard about the Red River Gorge long before I started planning for this trip so it was something I wanted to see. What was fun was that the Natural Arch Park was right across the way from it. We got a good start and even though the day was a little dreary, we were ready for bear or whatever. The drive around the Gorge is a scenic byway so that added to our fun. The only problem was we went the wrong way. We managed to find the right one(always stop and get a map at the visitor's center) and we proceded on our way. The Gorge drive had trails all around it and we tried a few of them. Lynn
was definitely more agile than I but I didn't hold her back too much. After going around the
drive, we came to the place where we should have started:Nada Tunnel. This tunnel is 13' x 12' x 900' and was used to carry timber to the saw mill. It is an incredible feat.
After we left the Gorge, we drove over to the State Park. We purchased tickets to take the ski lift up to the top of the Natural Arch. What a ride!!!! and What a view!!!!! Lynn was a little nervous about crossing over the Arch but she overcame her fear by walking across in the middle. Smart Gal!!! I have to admit that going down was a little scarey for me but I did alright. We had a great 4th and even saw some fireworks from our hotel.
